THE CONFIDENT SWEATER SYSTEM

A six-week intensive for capable knitters who want their sweater to finally fit and look intentional

Video Poster Image

If you’ve ever:

  • Followed a pattern exactly and still felt disappointed

  • Knit a sweater that technically “fit” but didn’t feel quite right

  • Avoided certain constructions because they felt intimidating

  • Wondered why some sweaters get worn constantly and others sit folded in a drawer

You don't need another pattern

You need a framework

The Confident Sweater System teaches you how sweaters actually work so you can approach any pattern with confidence and clarity instead of hesitation.

Most sweater courses are taught by designers explaining their own patterns.

After more than twenty years helping knitters troubleshoot sweaters in my yarn shop, I teach knitters how to understand any sweater pattern they want to knit.

Why capable knitters still struggle with sweaters

Most knitters learn in fragments

A tutorial on swatching and gauge
  A class on adjusting patterns
  A video on seaming techniques

But sweaters aren't built in fragments.

They are architecture.

Unless you understand how:

  • Pattern construction drives sizing decisions

  • Sweater style determines ease requirements

  • Knitting decisions impact finishing

  • Yarn and fabric create garment structure

  • Adjustments to one area affect the other

  • To know for sure that a sweater will suit you

You will keep hoping things work out instead of knowing they will.

This program brings those pieces together into one coherent system.

Whether you prefer top-down seamless designs, or traditional seamed garments, the principles in this program apply to all of them.

The Confident Sweater System organizes sweater knowledge into eight domains

The Eight Domains of Sweater Knitting

Inside the Confident Sweater System

This program is built around the core domains of confident sweater making:

What does this mean?

  • Knitting Competence:  Reading your fabric. Understanding Shaping. Recognizing mistakes early.

  • Pattern Literacy: Understanding size information, Decoding schematics. translating instructions into a plan

  • Measurements & Fit: Size selection with logic, not guesswork.  How to know how much ease you actually need and where

  • Intentional Modifications: Adjusting length and shaping with clarity.  adding details that matter.

  • Professional Finishing:  This is the difference between polished, sweaters and garments that look homemade.  Seams, necklines, picking up stitches

  • Yarn & Fabric Behavior: How yarn construction, fiber, and stitch pattern impact fabric and drape.  How fabric influences the final garment.

  • Personal Style: Fit answers: “Does this work on my body?” Style answers: “Does this look like me?” You can knit a sweater that fits beautifully and still not wear it. This domain teaches discernment.

  • Sustainable Process: How to build momentum without burnout. How to maintain standards without anxiety.

How do I know if The Confident Sweater System is for me?

Perfect for you if:

  • You have already knit a  sweater or two
  • You are capable but inconsistent
  • You're tired of almost right
  • You want polish not just completion
  • You value structure and clarity

Not for you if:

  • You're an absolute beginner who's never knit a garment.
  • You just want to knit and are not interested in the process of garment making
  • You prefer to figure things out by trial and error.
  • You are looking for a quick weekend project.
This sounds perfect for me

What this means for you

The Confident Sweater System isn't just a course.

It's a shift in how you approach every sweater you knit.

From reading and understanding the pattern to making the adjustments you need - you'll learn how to turn that information into a clear plan you can follow from cast on through finishing.

And once you have a plan, you stop second-guessing every step.

You'll approach sleeves, necklines, and complex construction with clarity because you understand how they work.

You won't just follow instructions. You'll understand, evaluate, refine, and implement them with confidence.

Ready to knit with clarity? Let's begin

A note from Ellen...

Hi, I’m Ellen.

I’ve been knitting sweaters since 1983 and running a yarn store since 2004.

For over more than 20 years, I’ve helped knitters troubleshoot patterns from every major designer -- guiding them through fit issues, construction confusion, and finishing challenges.

I’ve seen what works and what consistently goes wrong.

And I’ve watched capable knitters lose confidence simply because no one ever explained how the pieces connect.

I am not a designer with one template I teach you to adjust.

I am a sweater mentor.

I help knitters understand the structure beneath the pattern — how measurements, ease, yarn behavior, construction, and finishing all interact.

Because once you understand that structure, you are no longer dependent on a pattern’s every word.

You become thoughtful and deliberate.

You stop hoping and start evaluating.

That’s what I teach.

This program isn’t about hype, or hacks, or quick wins. It’s about clarity. It’s about building a foundation strong enough that every sweater you knit from here forward benefits from it.

It’s work I’ve been refining for decades.

Imagine...

Opening a pattern and immediately understanding its construction.

Choosing your size with logic, not hope.

Recognizing where shaping happens — and deciding whether it serves you.

Translating instructions into a clear plan before you cast on.

Finishing a sweater and seeing polish instead of “good enough.”

Casting on with composure.

Not because you know everything.

But because you know how to think.

Here's What Others Are Saying...

Lori

Ellen Lewis is a consummate educator. She doesn’t just teach techniques — she teaches the how and why behind them. She has an incredible ability to break complex knitting concepts down so they make sense to real knitters.

Her explanations are clear, patient, and easy to follow, whether you’re learning in person or from her videos. I’ve watched her explain the same concept several different ways until everyone understands it — and when she does, you suddenly see the bigger picture of how garments actually work.

Morgan

It wasn’t until I started working with Ellen that I started to really understand sweater knitting--patterns, swatching, blocking, finishing--and everything in between. What makes her teaching different is that she explains the why behind every technique. I don’t just know how to make increases — I understand which ones to use, when to use them, and why they matter. I can look ahead in a pattern and recognize which techniques will work best for a particular garment.

Ellen can take your sweater knitting from ‘Oh, you made that?’ to ‘Wow! You made this?!?’
